MMA Rankings for August 2011

August turned out to be a pretty major month then in the end. One champion cemented himself as the man at 185lbs, a couple of former champions got back on track...let’s go.

Heavyweight (206lbs and above):
Champion: Cain Velasquez - Last fight: W vs. Brock Lesnar – 10/23/10

1. Junior dos Santos - Last fight: W vs. Shane Carwin - 06/11/11
2. Alistair Overeem - Last fight: W vs. Fabricio Werdum – 06/18/11
3. Brock Lesnar - Last fight: L vs. Cain Velasquez - 10/23/10
4. Fabricio Werdum - Last fight: L vs. Alistair Overeem – 06/18/11
5. Antonio Silva - Last fight: W vs. Fedor Emelianenko – 02/12/11
6. Shane Carwin - Last fight: L vs. Junior Dos Santos – 06/11/11
7. Frank Mir - Last fight: W vs. Roy Nelson - 05/28/11
8. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira - Last fight: W vs. Brendan Schaub – 08/27/11
9. Brendan Schaub - Last fight: L vs. Rodrigo Nogueira – 08/27/11
10. Josh Barnett - Last fight: W vs. Brett Rogers – 06/18/11

Movements: Well, Brendan Schaub’s latest attempt at legend-killing went badly awry for him and suddenly Rodrigo Nogueira is relevant at HW again. For how much longer I don’t know, but hey, he just knocked off the top UFC prospect in the weight class. Can’t be bad.

Light-Heavyweight (186lbs-205lbs):
Champion: Jon Jones - Last fight: W vs. Mauricio Rua – 03/19/11

1. Mauricio Rua - Last fight: W vs. Forrest Griffin – 08/27/11
2. Rashad Evans - Last fight: W vs. Tito Ortiz - 08/06/11
3. Quinton Jackson - Last fight: W vs. Matt Hamill - 05/28/11
4. Lyoto Machida - Last fight: W vs. Randy Couture - 04/30/11
5. Forrest Griffin- Last fight: L vs. Mauricio Rua - 08/27/11
6. Phil Davis - Last fight: W vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira – 03/26/11
7. Alexander Gustafsson - Last fight: W vs. Matt Hamill – 08/06/11
8. Dan Henderson - Last fight: W vs. Fedor Emelianenko – 07/30/11
9. Tito Ortiz - Last fight: L vs. Rashad Evans – 08/06/11
10. Ryan Bader - Last fight: L vs. Tito Ortiz – 07/02/11

Movements: First off then, Shogun’s one-sided thrashing of Forrest Griffin at UFC 134 means he keeps the #1 spot below the champion Jones. Rashad Evans beat up Tito Ortiz to keep him right underneath and position him for a shot at the Jones-Rampage winner. Matt Hamill got slaughtered by Alexander Gustafsson and promptly retired, so Gustafsson enters the top ten for the first time. As for the bottom end, well, sorry fans of StrikeForce’s crop, Mousasi, Mo and Feijao have still done nothing to warrant them being ranked above the likes of Tito and Bader as Bader’s still got that win over Lil’ Nog keeping him afloat.

Middleweight (171lbs-185lbs):
Champion: Anderson Silva - Last fight: W vs. Yushin Okami – 08/27/11

1. Chael Sonnen - Last fight: L vs. Anderson Silva – 08/07/10
2. Yushin Okami - Last fight: L vs. Anderson Silva - 08/27/11
3. Ronaldo Jacare - Last fight: W vs. Robbie Lawler – 01/29/11
4. Mark Munoz – Last fight: W vs. Demian Maia – 06/11/11
5. Demian Maia - Last fight: L vs. Mark Munoz - 06/11/11
6. Vitor Belfort - Last fight:W vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama – 08/06/11
7. Michael Bisping – Last fight: W vs. Jorge Rivera – 02/27/11
8. Brian Stann - Last fight: W vs. Jorge Santiago – 05/28/11
9. Chris Leben - Last fight: W vs. Wanderlei Silva – 07/02/11
10. Rousimar Palhares - Last fight: W vs. Dan Miller – 08/27/11

Movements: No big moves as Anderson slaughtered poor Okami, but Toquinho’s in at #10 for being super-impressive (even with the brainfart) in thrashing Dan Miller – more impressive than Tim Kennedy was against Robbie Lawler at least.

Welterweight (156lbs-170lbs):
Champion: Georges St-Pierre - Last fight: W vs. Jake Shields - 04/30/11

1. Jon Fitch - Last fight: D vs. BJ Penn - 02/27/11
2. Jake Shields - Last fight: L vs. Georges St-Pierre – 04/30/11
3. Josh Koscheck - Last fight: L vs. Georges St-Pierre - 12/11/10
4. Carlos Condit - Last fight: W vs. Dong Hyun Kim – 07/02/11
5. Johny Hendricks - Last fight: W vs. Mike Pierce – 08/06/11
6. Charlie Brenneman - Last fight: W vs. Rick Story – 06/26/11
7. Rick Story - Last fight: L vs. Charlie Brenneman – 06/26/11
8. Thiago Alves - Last fight: L vs. Rick Story - 05/28/11
9. Diego Sanchez - Last fight: W vs. Martin Kampmann – 03/03/11
10. Nick Diaz - Last fight: W vs. Paul Daley – 04/09/11

Movements: Still the oddest division to rank out there. Big matches coming up though in Sanchez-Hughes, GSP-Diaz, Condit-Penn, Brenneman-Johnson and Story-Kampmann which will hopefully sort out the mess a little.

Lightweight (146lbs-155lbs):
Champion: Frankie Edgar - Last fight: D vs. Gray Maynard – 01/01/11

1. Gray Maynard - Last fight: D vs. Frankie Edgar - 01/01/11
2. Gilbert Melendez - Last fight: W vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri – 04/09/11
3. Ben Henderson - Last fight: W vs. Jim Miller – 08/14/11
4. Jim Miller – Last fight: W vs. Kamal Shalorus – 08/14/11
5. Melvin Guillard - Last fight: W vs. Shane Roller – 07/02/11
6. Clay Guida - Last fight: W vs. Anthony Pettis – 06/04/11
7. Anthony Pettis - Last fight: L vs. Clay Guida – 06/04/11
8. Shinya Aoki - Last fight: W vs. Rich Clementi – 05/29/11
9. Eddie Alvarez - Last fight: W vs. Pat Curran - 04/02/11
10. Tatsuya Kawajiri - Last fight: L vs. Gilbert Melendez – 04/09/11

Movements: In one of the most impressive performances all year Ben Henderson took out Jim Miller to stake his claim as the top contender after the Edgar-Maynard rematch in October. Apparently Aoki and Alvarez are fighting one another in Bellator too, which is cool, but until they get into the UFC (or Strike Force) and start taking on other legit competition I’ll keep moving them down.

Featherweight (136lbs-145lbs):
Champion: Jose Aldo - Last fight: W vs. Mark Hominick – 04/30/11

1. Chad Mendes – Last fight: W vs. Rani Yahya – 08/06/11
2. Kenny Florian - Last fight: W vs. Diego Nunes – 06/11/11
3. Hatsu Hioki - Last fight: W vs. Donald Sanchez – 04/29/11
4. Tyson Griffin - Last fight: W vs. Manny Gamburyan – 06/26/11
5. Manvel Gamburyan - Last fight: L vs. Tyson Griffin – 06/26/11
6. Diego Nunes – Last fight: L vs. Kenny Florian – 06/11/11
7. Mark Hominick - Last fight: L vs. Jose Aldo – 04/30/11
8. Dustin Poirier - Last fight: W vs. Jason Young – 06/11/11
9. Erik Koch - Last fight: W vs. Raphael Assuncao – 03/19/11
10. Pat Curran - Last fight: W vs. Marlon Sandro – 08/20/11

Movements: None of the top UFC guys outside of Chad Mendes competed this month but Pat Curran did KO Marlon Sandro in Bellator. Why isn’t he higher? Because in hindsight - and remember, I love Sandro – the fighters who haven’t been competing in the US have largely been overrated and it isn’t like Curran can move upwards anyway being on the outside of the Zuffa umbrella. So fuck it. I guess we’ll see how Hioki does in October.

Bantamweight (126lbs-135lbs):
Champion: Dominick Cruz - Last fight: W vs. Urijah Faber – 07/02/11

1. Urijah Faber - Last fight: L vs. Dominick Cruz – 07/02/11
2. Joseph Benavidez - Last fight: W vs. Eddie Wineland – 08/14/11
3. Brian Bowles - Last fight: W vs. Takeya Mizugaki – 07/02/11
4. Scott Jorgensen - Last fight: W vs. Ken Stone – 06/04/11
5. Brad Pickett - Last fight: W vs. Ivan Menjivar – 12/16/10
6. Demetrious Johnson - Last fight: W vs. Miguel Torres – 05/28/11
7. Miguel Angel Torres - Last fight: L vs. Demetrious Johnson – 05/28/11
8. Takeya Mizugaki - Last fight: L vs. Brian Bowles – 07/02/11
9. Wagnney Fabiano - Last fight: L vs. Joseph Benavidez – 11/11/10
10. Eddie Wineland - Last fight: L vs. Joseph Benavidez – 08/14/11

Movements: No movements at 135lbs as annoyingly, a top ten clash between Benavidez and Wineland wasn’t shown on TV. Boo!

Until next month, see ya.
